Fix Golf Slice

As a beginner golfer, are your drives screaming off into the right tree line and you can’t figure out why? Here are some tips on how to fix golf slice frustrations forever.

By the way, if you’re a left handed player, reverse the directions given in these tips.

Fix Golf Slice: Tip 1

Examine your set up. During your address, make sure that your body is lined up properly to the target line. Aim your left shoulder directly at the target. A wicked slice will result if that shoulder is even a tad out of line.

Fix Golf Slice: Tip 2

Look at your grip. If your grip is correct, you should be able to look down and see two or three knuckles of your left hand on the front of the shaft (the strong position). If not, your grip is a victim of bad form. Readjust your grip for the proper knuckle exposure and see if that solves the slicing problem. You can see a picture of a strong grip at our topic Perfect Golf Grip.

Fix Golf Slice: Tip 3

Evaluate your grip pressure. Be careful not to hold the club too tightly, as this can restrict your ability to release upon impact. On the other hand (having nothing whatsoever to do with whether you’re right or left handed), holding the club too loosely can allow the club head to wobble on impact, causing the ball to slice. Fore!

Fix Golf Slice: Tip 4

Check your hip action. For the ball to fly straight, the club face has to hit it squarely. That can’t happen if you hips aren’t turning fully through impact. So follow through fully on the swing to allow your hips to turn completely. (Find out more about hitting a golf ball straight.)

Fix Golf Slice: Tip 5

Slow down. Beginner golfers often try to speed up their swing, thinking that this will put more distance on the ball. Instead, this haste causes the club face to open at impact. It’s the opened club face that causes the ball to curve off to the right. Another case of “haste makes waste.”

Fix Golf Slice: Tip 6

Keep your head down. And keep it there until you’ve completed your swing. Lifting the head is one of the most common mistakes in form made by beginner golfers. Even some veteran players can’t seem to break this bad habit.

There are a couple of reasons why players lift their head right at the point of impact. Most players lift their head out of simple curiosity—they want to see where their ball is going. But just like with the proverbial cat, curiosity will kill the quality of your shot, too.

Another reason players lift their head is due to another error in form. During the swing, the right shoulder comes through at impact and bumps into the chin. This bump causes an automatic response to lift the head out of the way. To prevent this, maintain proper form during the swing and keep that right shoulder out of the way.
